Walking on Sunshine Summer Solstice Firewalk

To honor the power of the sun, as well as the power within each of us, we will be celebrating the Summer Solstice with a Firewalk. This walk will focus on empowerment and breaking through barriers that keep you from accessing your limitless potential. There will be a variety of activities to help us identify barriers, visualize our authentic powerful selves and build energy while the fire burns. When the coals are ready, participants will be invited to walk across them.

Firewalk

Firewalking is the practice of walking barefoot over hot coals, stones, or embers. It has been practiced in many cultures and religions around the world, The experience is incredibly transformative and empowering as it allows us to push past the limits of what we think is possible.

About Firewalking

Attending a firewalk is a commitment. The fire takes several hours to burn and an exact walk time is not always easy to predict. While the fire burns, walkers participate in a variety of discussions, meditations and energy building activities. This workshop is incredibly important as it helps build community amongst the group and energetically prepares you for the firewalk. By the time the coals are ready, walkers are feeling empowered, connected and supported.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it hot?

Yes. You are walking on hot coals and the coal bed is periodically refreshed with more coals.

Is it safe?

There is always a risk when you are around fire. As a result, it is imperative that participants do not drink alcohol or use mind-altering substances prior to the firewalk. All directions and guidance from the Firewalk Facilitator must be followed. Those who are not in compliance with safety measures will be told to leave.

Will I get burned?

Sometimes walkers experience a "kiss" or a hot spot on their feet. It might turn red, or feel like a sunburn, but it is not a significant injury and can usually be treated with Aloe.

How can you walk without being burned?

Common explanations are related to the short contact time while moving, the low conductivity of the coals, the ash causing some insulation and something scientific that I struggle to explain called the Leidenfrost effect. Spiritually, you're raising your energy throughout the entire experience so by the time you get to the coals you are in a high vibrational state. Supporting others while they walk continues to increase the collective energy around the fire. After you walk, there is a rush of adrenaline that helps keep you in a high vibe or altered conciousness.

Will it hurt?

Not really. You will feel heat. You will feel rough coals beneath your feet. You might get a '"kiss", but being burned by sizzling bacon while cooking breakfast is more painful then what you might experience.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothes. Avoid long flowy clothing. Feet will need to be bare and pants or skirts rolled/hiked up to about mid-calf. Layers are good since we walk in all kinds of weather and temperatures.

What if it rains?

We still walk. The rain is proof the fire is hot because it usually will not go out. We may need to adjust the length of the lane or limit the number of times participants can walk, but we can walk in most weather. Sometimes we may try to wait out the storm, but we will cancel if there is on-going lightening in the area or the wind is too strong.

What if I get to the fire and change my mind? Do I still have to walk?

No. Never. No one is ever pressured or forced to walk. Walking is always a personal choice. Just because you walked once, doesn't mean you will be called to walk again. Each fire and each walk is different and personal. You can still have an amazing experience even if you do not chose to walk.

Have you, as facilitator, ever made the choice not to walk?

Yes. During my first night of Firewalk Instructor Training I did not walk. I had been to 7 or 8 firewalks prior to the training and I had always walked before. That night we were learning to be firetenders and I found it more challenging than I ever expected. I struggled to keep my anxiety from getting out of control throughout the evening. When it was time to walk, I was dealing with so many conflicting emotions related to worthiness, people pleasing, perfectionism, etc. I knew that if I chose to walk it would be for all the wrong reasons so I declined.

So, do I just show up and walk?

No. A firewalk is an event. There is a workshop component that includes community building, activities to prepare you for the walk and instructions on how to walk. It can also take 2-3 hours for the fire to burn and the coals to be ready.
